Host nation India made a dominant start at the inaugural World Yogasana Championship 2026, winning five out of the first six gold medals on the opening day at the Eka Arena.
West Bengal’s Abhay Barman (Senior Men) and Ritu Mondal (Senior Women) clinched gold in the traditional yogasana category, giving India a strong start.
Abhay Barman secured India’s first gold with 63.42 points, while Indonesia’s Arkan Rianto won silver and Uzbekistan’s Alan took bronze. Ritu Mondal followed with a gold in the Senior Women’s category, scoring 64.33 points.
In the Senior ‘A’ Men’s category, Singapore’s Nathaniel Tan Leong Ann won gold, preventing a complete sweep by India. Tanzania’s Karimu Swafi claimed silver, while India’s Sumir Gnawali secured bronze. India bounced back in the Senior ‘A’ Women’s category, where Ritu Thakur won gold, followed by Argentina’s Nabila Sol Baraja with silver and Kenya’s Awour Saulinya with bronze.
Roshan Thapa clinched gold in the Senior ‘B’ Men’s category, while Bangladesh’s Mohammad Mamun Khan Babu took silver and Kyrgyzstan’s Danil Raikov won bronze. Jyoti Derkar added another gold for India in the Twisting Body Individual Senior ‘B’ Women’s category with 46.14 points.
The championship marks a significant step in transforming yoga into a global competitive sport and moving closer to Olympic recognition. The event is being organized with the support of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of AYUSH, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Gujarat State authorities, and other organizations. India has fielded a strong 122-member contingent, with competitions being held across six age categories.
