The weather has changed across several parts of Jharkhand due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and the impact of Cyclone Arnab. Dense clouds have covered various districts, with rainfall reported in several areas. With heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds expected in the coming days, the Meteorological Department has issued weather alerts for 15 districts across the state.
An orange alert has been issued for six districts — Palamu, Garhwa, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla and Simdega. A yellow alert has been issued for nine other districts, including the state capital Ranchi. Weather conditions are expected to intensify in several parts of the state on Thursday, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious.
Orange Alert in Six Districts
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in six districts of Jharkhand due to the impact of the cyclone.
Palamu, Garhwa, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla and Simdega are likely to experience heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph. An orange alert has been issued for these districts in view of the possibility of severe weather conditions.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to take necessary precautions. During thunderstorms and strong winds, people should avoid taking shelter under trees, standing near electricity poles or remaining in open areas.
Cyclone Arnab : Yellow Alert in Nine Districts, Including Ranchi
A yellow alert has been issued for nine districts, including Ranchi, the state capital.
Apart from Ranchi, the districts covered under the alert include Khunti, Chatra, Koderma, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum and East Singhbhum.
These areas may experience moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. Although no special alert has been issued for the remaining districts at present, residents have been advised to monitor official weather updates as conditions may change.
Temperatures Drop Across Several Cities
The impact of the cyclone has also led to a noticeable decline in maximum temperatures across several cities in Jharkhand. Cloud cover and rainfall have reduced the intensity of daytime heat.
According to Meteorological Department data, Ranchi recorded a drop of 5.8 degrees Celsius in its maximum temperature. Jamshedpur and Medininagar recorded a decline of 4.4 degrees Celsius each, while Chaibasa registered a drop of 3.8 degrees Celsius. Bokaro recorded a decrease of 3.4 degrees Celsius.
The fall in temperatures indicates the widespread influence of the weather system across the state.
Chaibasa Records 13 mm of Rainfall
Rainfall has already been reported in several parts of Jharkhand due to the cyclone’s influence.
According to the available rainfall data, Chaibasa recorded the highest rainfall at 13 mm. Jamshedpur received 9 mm, Latehar recorded 8 mm, and Ranchi received 4 mm of rainfall.
Medininagar and Bokaro recorded 2 mm of rainfall each.
Rainfall intensity may vary over the coming days depending on the movement and strength of the weather system. Heavy rain is particularly likely in the six districts under the orange alert, making it important for residents and local authorities to remain prepared.
How Did the Low-Pressure System Over the Bay of Bengal Develop Into a Cyclone?
According to the weather report, a wind system originating over the Andaman Sea reached the Bay of Bengal on October 23. A low-pressure area subsequently formed over the region on October 26 and gradually intensified into a cyclonic system.

The report states that the cyclone made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coastal regions on Wednesday morning, accompanied by winds reaching approximately 135 kmph.
The system is now showing signs of weakening and moving towards the northwest. However, its residual effects could continue to trigger rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in Jharkhand and other regions.
More Rain and Lightning Expected on October 30
Rainfall is likely to continue in Jharkhand over the coming days. Another weather system is reportedly developing over the Bay of Bengal, which could bring light to moderate rain to most districts of the state on October 30.
Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible in some areas. According to the report, a yellow alert has been issued across the state for that day.
Residents have been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions. During thunderstorms, people should avoid open fields, agricultural land and standing beneath tall trees. Caution is also necessary near weak structures and electrical wires during strong winds.
Safety Advisory for Residents
With orange alerts in six districts and yellow alerts in nine districts, residents are advised to follow instructions issued by the Meteorological Department and local authorities.
People in areas likely to experience heavy rain and strong winds should avoid unnecessary travel wherever possible. They should also remain alert to the possibility of lightning, waterlogging and other weather-related disruptions.
Overall, the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and the effects of Cyclone Arnab have brought unsettled weather to Jharkhand. With further rainfall and thunderstorms forecast for Thursday and October 30, residents are advised to closely monitor official weather updates and take appropriate precautions.
