A 48-year-old patient who initially sought treatment for joint pain was diagnosed with multi-organ failure at Medicover Hospital, Whitefield. The patient had been receiving treatment at another hospital for joint pain but showed no improvement. Concerned about his deteriorating condition, he consulted Dr. Raja Selvarajan, Senior Consultant at Medicover Hospital, where extensive investigations revealed multiple complications, including sepsis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA).
Upon admission, the patient was already in critical condition. He suffered from severe respiratory distress and fluctuating blood pressure, necessitating immediate transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Blood tests confirmed sepsis, bacterial infection, and severe hemoglobin depletion, making his recovery a major medical challenge. Further assessments revealed pancytopenia, kidney failure, metabolic acidosis, and severe mental disorientation.
Aggressive Treatment and Recovery
Given the severity of his condition, the medical team of Dr. Ravishankar, Senior Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. Manjunath B.G., Pulmonologist and Dr. Raja Selvarajan, Senior Consultant initiated renal replacement therapy (RRT), advanced plasma exchange (plasmapheresis), and Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy. The patient also required broad-spectrum antibiotics, bronchoscopy, and blood transfusions. X-rays and further tests detected bilateral lung consolidation and pleural effusion, requiring pleural tapping.
Despite these challenges, the patient gradually showed signs of improvement. His respiratory function stabilized, kidney function improved, and blood infection was brought under control. After spending several days in intensive care, he was shifted to the general ward for further observation.
Successful Recovery and Discharge
After multiple cycles of advanced treatment, including three ICU-based plasma exchanges and continued renal support therapy, the patient made a remarkable recovery. Once his condition stabilized, he was discharged in a healthy state.
Dr. Raja Selvarajan expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “This case was an extremely challenging one, but with timely intervention and multi-disciplinary collaboration, we successfully treated the patient and restored his health.”
