In a colossal achievement of endurance and determination, Shreyas Hosur, India Railway Accounts Service – 2011 Batch, Senior Divisional Finance Manager/Bengaluru Division, has etched his name in history by successfully completing the iconic Manhattan 20 Bridges Swim, becoming the only the twelfth Indian and the first civil servant ever to do so.
Covering an astonishing 48.5 kilometers (28.5 miles) around the island of Manhattan, he finished the grueling course in 9 hours and 12 minutes, battling unpredictable currents and unrelenting physical demands. The Manhattan 20 Bridges Swim, organized by New York Open Water (NYOW), is one of the most prestigious marathon swims in the world. It takes participants around the entirety of Manhattan Island, passing under its twenty bridges, including the popular Brooklyn Bridge & the Manhattan Bridge. The swim is notorious for its challenging conditions—choppy waters, shifting tides, and powerful currents—making it as much a mental battle as it is a physical one.
It is an immensely proud moment for all of us that one of our officers has achieved this extremely rare feat. In 2022, Shreyas also became the first officer from Railways and the first from non-uniformed civil services to complete the gruelling Ironman triathlon involving a 3.8km Swim, 180km Cycle & 42.2km Run, in 13 hrs 23 mins.
