Sri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandiram, Bangalore, a highly reputed organisation for classical music conducted its annual Spring music festival at Bangalore Gayana Samaj.
As a part of the festival there was a spectacular jugalbandhi concert by the very reputed duo Vid. Dr. Vijaygopal on flute and Vid. Mylai Karthikeyan on Nadaswaram.
Dr. Vijaygopal is a highly accomplished flautist who has enthralled audience across the globe. An ‘A’ grade artist of All India Radio, Chennai and ICCR panel member, recipient of several awards, Vijaygopal’s dexterity and playing techniques are amazing. He can reach out to much more than the two and a half octaves which a normal flute can produce.
Born into a family of nagaswaram and thavil players, Karthikeyan was initiated into the art by his father Tirumalai S. Mohanraj. His expertise on the instrument defies his age as he continues to hone the legacy. The twosome are well-known for their jugalbandhi concerts.
They gave an excellent performance at Gayanasamaj. After a spectacular Natakuranjivarnam, ‘vinayakaninuvina’of Sri E.V. Ramakrishna Bhagavathar, in Hamsadwani, Aditalamwas enriched by a splendid swaram.
Dwijavanthiragam and Sri Muthuswamy Dikshithar’s Akhilandeswari on the deity of Jambukeswarar temple, Thiruvanaikaval was divine. Sarasangi was appealing with wonderful dhatu and jantiswara prayogams and a soothing composition of Sri Ramaswami Shivan, ‘Neekeladayaradu’.
After a pleasant ‘sarasasamadana of Saint Thyagarajan Kapinarayani, the duo presented an interesting RTP with two ragas Dharmavathi and Bhoopali, switching between the ragas during thanam, neraval and swaraprastharam which was immaculate.
The pallavi was composed by the artists in aditalam, dwikalai and presented in trikalam, trisram and variations. Ragamalikaswarams kept audience in anticipation, and had a lovely garland of ragas Bindumalini, Kapi, Mohanakalyani, Kalyanavasantha.
Thaniavartanam by Mridangam exponent Sri Puttur Nikshith, disciple of Mannarkoil J Balajand Ghatam virtuoso Sri Trichy Krishnaswamy disciple of Thanjai V. Srinivasan and Vid. Sri.B. Harikumar, was very inspiring and the dialogue between the two instruments was delightful. Concert concluded with some lilting items Govardhana Giridhari in Darbarikanada, thillana in behag and famous thiruppu ghazhverse amudamooru in sindhu bhairavi. A great concert to cherish for long.
