Narayana Health City announced successfully completion of 10,000 orthopaedic surgeries over the past three years, marking a significant milestone in advanced joint, spine and complex reconstructive care. The accomplishment affirms the hospital’s strength across a wide spectrum of orthopaedic care, spanning diverse and complex musculoskeletal conditions.
Supported by robotic-assisted navigation, advanced imaging, neuromonitoring and customised implant technology, the Department of Orthopaedics continues to manage increasingly challenging cases with enhanced surgical precision and early mobilisation outcomes, reflecting its sustained focus on technology-enabled, patient-centred care.
This depth of expertise is reflected in several recent high-complexity cases managed at the hospital.
In one such case, Janak (name changed), a 70-year-old man from Kalaburagi who had been unable to walk for nearly a year due to persistent hip pain approached Narayana Health City for help. He had undergone a total hip replacement in 1999, followed by a revision surgery in 2013. Doctors found that his implant had loosened, and a large swelling had developed around the joint. Investigations confirmed a rare complication called metallosis (a reaction to metal components of the implant) which had led to significant bone damage.
The team performed a staged reconstruction, first removing the failed implant and damaged tissue, and later rebuilding the hip joint using a customised 3D-printed component and a specialised prosthesis. The patient was able to stand and walk with support soon after surgery.
Dr. Suman M. Byregowda, Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics, at Narayana Health City, said, “This was a rare and challenging revision case involving implant loosening, metallosis and major bone loss. We adopted a staged approach; first clearing the diseased tissue and then reconstructing the joint with a customised 3D-printed implant. Despite the complexity, the patient was able to regain mobility shortly after surgery, which is always our primary goal.”
In another complex case, 13-year-old Ananya (name changed) came to Narayana Health City with severe congenital scoliosis, a condition that had caused her spine to curve beyond 80 degrees. The deformity led to visible shoulder imbalance and increasing difficulty in walking. She underwent a complex spinal correction surgery performed using robotic-assisted navigation along with real-time monitoring to ensure precision and safety. The technology helped surgeons place implants accurately while protecting neurological function. Post-surgery, her spinal alignment was significantly corrected. She was mobilised on the second postoperative day and discharged with improved balance and mobility.
Dr. Vinu Raj, Consultant – Spine, Department of Orthopedics at Narayana Health City, shared, “In complex spinal deformities, precision is critical. Robotic-assisted navigation allows us to plan implant placement in advance and execute it with high accuracy during surgery, while real-time monitoring enhances safety. While the technology supports us, surgical judgement remains central. Our ultimate goal is to not just correct the spine, but to help young patients regain balance, mobility and confidence in their daily lives.”
In addition to spine and joint reconstruction, the hospital has also managed complex orthopaedic oncology cases. 19-year-old Somling (name changed) presented with persistent shoulder pain that was diagnosed as Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. The tumor had significantly damaged the shoulder bone. Following a strong response to chemotherapy, the team performed a complex limb-salvage surgery, removing the affected bone, and reconstructing the shoulder with a metallic prosthesis. He subsequently completed radiotherapy and chemotherapy and is recovering well.
Dr. Suman added, “Early diagnosis and coordinated treatment are critical in aggressive bone cancers. The good response to chemotherapy allowed us to preserve the limb through complex reconstruction while ensuring oncological safety.”
With 10,000 surgeries completed in three years, Narayana Health City continues to strengthen its role as a centre for advanced orthopaedic and spine care, combining clinical expertise, technology integration and multidisciplinary collaboration to deliver improved patient outcomes.
