Patients from different parts of India and abroad are increasingly travelling to Bengaluru in search of specialised and complex transplant care, highlighting the city’s growing reputation as a destination for advanced medical treatment.

Recent transplant cases at SPARSH Hospitals involving patients from Kashmir, Ghana, Kerala and Bengaluru reflect this emerging trend. The hospital said these cases demonstrate how specialised expertise, advanced technology, critical-care facilities and multidisciplinary medical teams are enabling patients with complex conditions to access life-saving treatment.

Among the recent cases was a 49-year-old man from Kashmir who travelled to Bengaluru for a liver transplant. His condition was particularly complex due to complete portal vein thrombosis, which made the procedure challenging. Despite the complexity, the transplant was successfully performed, and the patient is recovering.

Another patient, a 27-year-old man from Ghana, travelled to Bengaluru for a kidney transplant after living with end-stage renal failure and depending on dialysis for more than 18 months. Following the transplant, he is reported to be recovering well.

The hospital has also treated complex paediatric transplant cases. A 13-year-old girl from Kerala, who was suffering from end-stage liver disease, travelled to Bengaluru for treatment and subsequently underwent a liver transplant. The organ was donated by a 5-year-old deceased donor, giving the young patient a new chance at life.

In another significant paediatric case closer to home, a 13-year-old girl from Bengaluru with dilated cardiomyopathy progressed to advanced heart failure despite medical management. She subsequently underwent a heart transplant and is now reported to be doing well.

Bengaluru’s growing role in advanced healthcare

The increasing number of patients travelling to Bengaluru for complex transplantation is being attributed to the city’s combination of specialist medical expertise, advanced technology, sophisticated critical-care infrastructure and multidisciplinary healthcare capabilities.

SPARSH Hospitals, which has been rooted in Bengaluru for two decades, has evolved from its initial focus on orthopaedics into an eight-centre multi-specialty healthcare network. Within a relatively short period, the hospital has performed more than 400 transplants, supported by over 16 transplant surgeons and multidisciplinary clinical teams.

The hospital said its transplant programmes are backed by established protocols covering the entire treatment journey—from patient evaluation and donor assessment to surgery, intensive and critical care, recovery and long-term follow-up.PES Shivamogga

Speaking about Bengaluru’s emergence as a healthcare destination, Dr. Sharan Shivaraj Patil, Chairman and Founder of SPARSH Group of Hospitals, said the city’s depth of expertise and specialised infrastructure has played an important role in attracting patients from different parts of the country and overseas.

“Bengaluru has evolved into a healthcare destination because of the depth of expertise, technology and specialised care available in the city. At SPARSH, transplantation is a clear reflection of our journey towards bringing increasingly complex treatments closer to patients,”
-Dr. Sharan Shivaraj Patil

Comprehensive transplant programmes

Across its duly authorised centres, SPARSH Hospitals undertakes liver, kidney, lung and heart transplantation. These programmes involve multidisciplinary teams comprising transplant surgeons, physicians, anaesthetists, Intensiveness, nurses, nutrition specialists, rehabilitation teams and other healthcare professionals.

The hospital said the coordinated approach is aimed at ensuring continuity of care throughout the transplant journey. Patients undergo detailed evaluation before transplantation, followed by surgery, post-operative critical care, rehabilitation and regular follow-up.

Complex transplant procedures often require close coordination between multiple medical departments, particularly when patients present with advanced disease or other complications. The recent cases from Kashmir, Ghana and Kerala illustrate the growing demand for such specialised services among patients who are willing to travel long distances to access treatment.Kumadvathi College Shikariura

Supporting patients from financially vulnerable backgrounds

Alongside its clinical programmes, the hospital also supports financially vulnerable patients through the SPARSH Foundation. The initiative provides assistance to eligible patients requiring critical medical interventions, including transplantation, helping address financial barriers that can prevent patients from accessing specialised treatment.

Healthcare providers say access to transplant care involves more than the surgical procedure itself. Long-term management, critical care, rehabilitation, immunosuppression and follow-up are integral parts of successful transplantation. The availability of these services within an integrated healthcare ecosystem can therefore be an important factor for patients and their families when choosing a treatment destination.

Patients travelling across borders for treatment

The case of the young patient from Ghana also points to the increasing movement of international patients seeking specialised medical treatment in India. Bengaluru’s established medical institutions, specialist expertise and advanced hospital infrastructure have contributed to the city’s growing role in providing complex healthcare services to patients from outside the country.

For patients travelling from other states or countries, the availability of coordinated evaluation, surgery, critical care and post-transplant follow-up is particularly important, as transplantation requires sustained medical supervision even after the patient is discharged from hospital.

The recent transplant journeys at SPARSH Hospitals—from a liver transplant for a patient from Kashmir and a kidney transplant for a patient from Ghana to complex paediatric liver and heart transplants—underscore the increasing demand for specialised care in Bengaluru.

Together, these cases highlight the importance of medical expertise, advanced infrastructure, technology, multidisciplinary coordination and continuity of care in managing complex transplant patients.

With transplant capabilities continuing to expand, Bengaluru is increasingly positioning itself as a destination for patients seeking advanced and life-saving treatment, while institutions such as SPARSH Hospitals are strengthening their presence in the field of complex transplantation.
