A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and stabbed to death by four persons, including three juveniles, in Delhi. The accused allegedly dumped her body in an open field, where parts of the decomposed body were later eaten by stray dogs, police said.
The shocking incident came to light on September 13, when the police recovered the decomposed body from an open area several days after the alleged rape and murder. The body had decomposed to such an extent that its gender could not be established immediately, according to the police.
Girl and accused allegedly knew each other
According to investigators, the victim and the accused persons were known to each other. Police said the girl was traveling with them in a tempo when the alleged crime took place.
The accused and the girl allegedly consumed alcohol inside the tempo before the girl was sexually assaulted. She was subsequently stabbed to death and her body was allegedly taken to an open field and abandoned.
The victim’s family had not reported her missing. During the investigation, her family reportedly told the police that she would sometimes leave home and return after a few days.
Teen Gangraped : More than 50 CCTV cameras analyzed
A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
As there were no apparent eyewitnesses and the identities of the suspects were initially unknown, police teams began examining CCTV footage from the area and adjoining routes.
Investigators analyzed footage from more than 50 CCTV cameras. During the exercise, a tempo was spotted near the crime scene around the suspected time of the incident. However, its registration number could not be clearly seen because of darkness.
Police then tracked the movement of the suspected vehicle through multiple CCTV cameras installed along different routes.
Night-long search leads to tempo
A night-long search operation was carried out during the intervening night of September 15 and 16. Police eventually traced the suspected tempo and identified its driver, who was subsequently questioned.
The investigation led to the apprehension of four persons allegedly linked to the crime, including three juveniles.
The adult accused has been identified as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu, a resident of Khadda Colony, police said. The three juveniles are aged 16 and 17.
Weapons and vehicle recovered
Police said they recovered two knives allegedly used in the crime, along with clothes allegedly worn by the accused. The tempo suspected to have been used in the incident was also recovered.
Investigators are now working to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the individual roles of each of the four apprehended persons.
Police are also examining forensic and technical evidence gathered during the investigation. Further investigation is underway, officials said.
