In an inspiring case that underscores the power of a mother’s love and advancements in transplant medicine, a 38-year-old woman from Bengaluru has successfully undergone a second kidney transplant at Medicover Hospitals, Whitefield. The life-saving procedure was made possible by the selfless donation of a kidney by her mother.
The patient, who had been suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) for several years, had previously received a kidney from her father in 2016. The initial transplant was successful, and she led a stable life for several years. However, in late 2024, she began experiencing health issues including weight loss, poor appetite, and constipation. Lab reports revealed rising serum creatinine levels, leading to a diagnosis of graft failure. She was subsequently placed on maintenance hemodialysis twice a week.

A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Pramod, Senior Urologist and Transplant Surgeon, performed the complex surgery. This time, her mother stepped in as the donor. The high-risk procedure lasted for about three hours and involved coordinated efforts from nephrology, urology, and transplant specialists using advanced surgical technology.

Despite the complexities, the patient showed remarkable recovery. Within seven days post-surgery, her creatinine levels normalized, urine output improved, and all key blood parameters including hemoglobin and white cell counts were stable.
The patient has since been discharged and is now on a carefully monitored medication plan. She will continue regular follow-ups for renal function monitoring and immunosuppressive therapy adjustments.
