Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai opined that it was a big tragedy that the caste census has become a political weapon in the current scenario.
Speaking at the session on literature and employment as part of the 24th annual convention of the Akhila Bharat Lingayat Veerashaiva Mahasabha at the Bapuji MBA College here on Sunday, he said the caste census was required to formulate the programs for the economic, social and academic progress of all the communities. But now the caste census was making sound to use it for the political mileage. It should not be allowed at any cost as there were many avenues to do politics.
Bommai said of late, efforts were made to divide the society in the name of caste census. The policy must be clear for that census. Now the caste census which had been held in Karnataka was not the caste census as it was the census held to study the social, economic and academic condition of every community. But the government was all set to issue an order that it was the caste census. The Supreme Court has time and again stressed that the Government of India alone has the right to undertake the caste census.
