In a complex and rare life-saving surgery, Surgical Gastroenterologist Dr. Hanumantha Naik and his team at SS Narayana Superspeciality Centre successfully reconstructed the food pipe and stomach of a 40-year-old man who had suffered severe internal damage after accidentally consuming acid. The case is being hailed as a major success in complex gastrointestinal reconstruction in North Karnataka region.
The patient, hailing from a neighbouring district, had suffered extensive burns to his oesophagus (food pipe), stomach, and upper small intestine. His stomach had even developed a hole due to the corrosive injury. For months, the patient could not even swallow his own saliva and had to spit it out every time.

Dr Naik and his team waited six months to allow internal scarring and healing to stabilise. During this time, he survived only on tube feeding and could not eat or drink by mouth.
Dr. Hanumanth Naik recently performed an esophago-coloplasty, a rare and demanding surgery where a section of the large intestine (colon) is used to replace the damaged food pipe. In this case, a portion of the right and transverse colon (large intestine) was used.
This colon segment was connected to the remaining part of the oesophagus in the neck — just three centimetres below the pharynx in the throat area. The other end of the colon was joined to the small intestine near the jejunum, about 30 cm from the usual bend after the stomach.

Mr Sunil Bhandarigal, Facility Director of SS Narayana Health Super Speciality Centre hailed the effort of the team and said, “This case reflects the depth of surgical expertise and commitment our team brings to patient care. Reconstructing the stomach and oesophagus using the colon is not only rare but requires extraordinary precision, coordination and post-operative management. Dr. Hanumanth Naik and his team have set a new benchmark in complex gastrointestinal surgeries in this region. We are proud that a life which was nearly written off has been fully restored, and that the patient is now living with dignity. At SS Narayana, our focus has always been to ensure that even the most challenging cases receive world-class treatment close to home.”
Facility Director Mr Sunil Bhandarigal, Senior Marketing Manager Mr Prashanth GN and others were present during the press conference.
