V. Somanna, Union Minister of State for Railways & Jal Shakti, today flagged off the new DEMU passenger train services between Dandeli and Alnavar from Dandeli, marking the restoration of passenger rail connectivity on this important section.
The introduction of the DEMU services fulfills a long-pending demand of the people of Uttara Kannada and Dharwad districts, reinstating much-needed rail connectivity that had been suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The flagging-off ceremony was attended by Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri, Hon’ble MP, Uttara Kannada;R. V. Deshpande, Hon’ble MLA, Haliyal; S. P. Shastri, Principal Chief Commercial Manager, South Western Railway; Bela Meena, DRM/Hubballi; Rajendra Jain, Managing Director, West Coast Paper Mills; and Asha Shetty, Konkan Regional Railway Manager, along with other dignitaries, public representatives, and senior railway officials.
Addressing the gathering, V. Somanna highlighted the strong emphasis laid on railway infrastructure in Karnataka in the Union Budget 2026–27, under which ₹7,748 crore has been allocated for railway projects in the State. He noted that this significant allocation reflects the Government of India’s firm commitment to strengthening rail connectivity, improving passenger amenities, and accelerating regional development across Karnataka.
The Hon’ble Minister further stated that the resumption of DEMU services on the Dandeli–Alnavar section will provide a major impetus to tourism, ensuring easier access to Dandeli and other eco-tourism destinations, while also generating new employment opportunities for local residents. He emphasized that improved rail connectivity will play a key role in driving socio-economic growth in Uttara Kannada and Dharwad districts.
Shri R. V. Deshpande, Hon’ble MLA, requested the Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways to consider extending the train service up to Hubballi and to provide connectivity to Pandharpur, stressing that railways remain the most affordable and accessible mode of transport for the common public.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble MP Shri Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri expressed happiness that a long-standing demand of the region has finally been met and urged the public to make full use of the service. He also highlighted the region’s tourism potential, noting that it is well known for river rafting, trekking, cycling, mountain biking, and its scenic natural attractions.
Regular DEMU passenger train services will commence with effect from 09.02.2026, operating six days a week (except Sunday).
The train will operate with a 04-car DEMU rake, comprising 02 Driving Power Cars and 02 Trailer Cars.
