Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) has successfully completed one of the largest monolithic concrete pours in NPCIL’s history for the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) programme at Kaiga Units 5 & 6 Nuclear Power Project, Karnataka.
The operation involved the placement of approximately 7,250 m³ of concrete with a rebar density of 360 kg/m³, marking a major construction milestone for Kaiga Units 5 & 6 and for MEIL’s maiden nuclear assignment.
Executing a continuous pour of this magnitude on a first nuclear project underscores the company’s engineering capability, detailed planning and execution excellence in one of the most demanding sectors of infrastructure construction.
Delivering this pour required extensive mobilisation of materials, plant and manpower to maintain uninterrupted quality and schedule. MEIL established a temperature-controlled concrete production capacity of 360 m³/hr maintained concrete placement temperature at 19°C, and deployed concrete pumps with a capacity of 340 m³/hr.
To support mix cooling and thermal control, the company set up a 510 TPD ice production capacity and 400 MT of ice storage, together with a 2,600 MT combined cement and flyash storage capacity. MEIL ensured 100% availability of all concrete ingredients before the start of the pour, enabling continuous operations despite the scale and complexity of the task.
The Kaiga site presented significant environmental and logistical challenges: a remote location with heavy monsoon rainfall and constrained access. To mitigate weather risk and enable uninterrupted concreting, MEIL designed and erected a 75-metre-diameter rain protection system that allowed continuous placement while safeguarding material quality, worker safety and productivity.

The operation demanded precise coordination across batching, transportation, placement, compaction, testing and curing; MEIL implemented comprehensive Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) measures at every stage to ensure full compliance with the stringent standards governing nuclear construction.
A large workforce was deployed across multiple shifts to deliver the pour safely and efficiently. Hundreds of engineers, supervisors, quality professionals, surveyors, technicians, operators, safety personnel and skilled workmen worked round the clock, demonstrating exceptional commitment, resilience, despite difficult weather conditions and numerous operational challenges. Rigorous safety protocols were followed throughout the operation, and all quality checks and tests were performed in line with nuclear-sector requirements to ensure structural integrity and long-term performance.
This successful, historic concrete pour is a significant stage in the construction of Kaiga Units 5 & 6 and further reinforces MEIL’s credentials as a trusted engineering and infrastructure partner capable of executing highly complex projects to world-class standards. As India advances its indigenous nuclear power programme, MEIL is proud to contribute to the nation’s clean energy mission through innovation, disciplined project execution and engineering excellence. The achievement at Kaiga not only showcases MEIL’s technical and logistical strengths but also positions the company for future strategic assignments in the nuclear and critical-infrastructure sectors.
