Healing through music, therapeutic value of music has been a topic of much research. Music has enormous effect on human emotions. Corroborating the impact of music on various emotions and personality development can be extrapolated through the wonderful presentation by Kum. Swarathmika Srikanth for Marghazhimatram 6th Edition festival conducted by SciArtsRUs at Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai, December 2025. She was ably supported by Smt. Sreelakshmi Bhat on Violin, Sri Ramasmaran Krishnakumar on Mridangam and Sri Sai Mukundaon Khanjira.
The presentation was a unique significant work which clearly emphasises the benefits and need for practising music. It was an amalgamation of Music, Physics, Yoga, Physiology and Spirituality, Their integration was ably illustrated through medium of Carnatic music.
The number SEVEN symbolises spirituality, wisdom, introspection and search for truth.
Rainbow has 7 colours VIBGYOR (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red). Human body has 7 chakras, root(muladhara), sacral (swadhishtana), solar plexus (manipura), heart (Anahatha) throat(Vishuddha), third eye (Ajna) and crown (sahasrAra). It is well known that there are 7-9 important endocrine glands in the body that secrete hormones giving rise to specific emotions.
Notes of music are also seven S R G M P D N (Shadja, Rishabha, Gandhara, Madhyama, Panchama, Daivatha, Nishada) The most intriguing fact is that all these groups of seven are very closely inter- related.
This thematic concept was presented correlating the association of each of the 7 swaras to corresponding chakras, glands, specific colours and the emotive experience. Phrases rich with particular swaras give rise to positive emotions. Specific ragas and great compositions were chosen to illustrate the same.
Shadjam (colour Red) connects Mooladhara Chakra, adrenal gland giving emotions of firmness confidence It was illustrated through the masterpiece in raga nattai- Jagadanandakaraka.
R (Orange) relates to Swadhishtana chakra, reproductive glands giving emotions of creativity, pleasure, s kanada(“kanthimathi” Mishrachapu) was presented with beautiful phrases at R by the artists.
G (Yellow)connects with Manipura Chakra, pancreas gland giving emotions like will power, self esteem, awakens inner fire and confidence, demonstrated in raga Vakulabharana ‘E Ramuni‘ of Thyagaraja.
M(Green) Anahatha Chakra, thymus gland, gives emotions of love, compassion. Long use of M calms the heart, balances emotion, it was illustrated using raga Kapiin a rare krithi of Sri Shyamashastri – Akhilandeswari.
P(Blue)connects Vishuddha Chakra, thyroid glands giving rise to clear truthful expression, effective communication which was enumerated through ‘emayyarama’ of Sri Thyagaraja in kamboji.
D(Indigo) denotes Agnya Chakra, pitutary gland giving intuition, inner vision. D phrases enhance introspection and insight, and was illustrated through raga – Pantuvarali.
N (Violet)connects sahasrara chakra, pineal gland whose secretion gives rise to bliss, transcendence, awareness, consciousness N-S oscillations introduce calm, meditative state and was highlighted through raga Sindhu Bhairavi.
