It was a memorable performance by Sri D.B. Ashwin at Mylapore Fine Arts during the Marghazhi season.
Ashwin is the grandson of the legendary musician Sri T.K. Rangachary and great grandson of famous #Telugu playwright Dharmavaram Ramakrishnamacharlu. His musical presentations are very melodious, with soulful gamakas, smooth traversal over the octaves with wonderful raga delineation.
Today’s concert was no exception. He was ably supported by the renowned violinist, Bombay R Madhavan on #Violin, none other than Parupalli Phalgun from #Vijayawada, a very much sought after and internationally renowned vidwan. on Mridangam, who hails from a family of musicians and is a recipient of Bismillah khan Yuva Puraskar and extraordinary artist Sri Madippakkam Murali on Ghatam, a master of unique double-hand fingering technique.Ashwin presented a concert with many challenging ragas and compositions. He began the concert with a Krithi of Saint Thyagaraja in Atana set to Adi tala Ilalo Pranatharthi, in praise of Lord Panchanadishwarar of Thiruvaiyyaru. Next was a beautiful composition of Ponnaiah pillai Ranganathude. Antharanganathude in raga Sourashtram roopaka talam, known for its lyrical alliteration.
Brisk swaraprastharam for V.R. Gopala iyer’s ‘Tamadam thagaadayya’ in Adi tala, brought out the essence of Mohanakalyani. A rare ragam ‘Ramakali’ with probably an only known Carnatic composition-Rama rama kali kalusha virAma by Sri-Muthuswami Dikshithar in rupaka tala was rendered in a majestic gait apt for the song.
In contrast came Thaye Tripurasundari of Periyasaami Tooran in Shuddhasaveri Khandachapu, The main presentation was a very elaborate and absorbing alapana in Thodi followed by the popular Koluvamaregada. of Sri. Thyagarajar in Adi Tala, nerval at the famous Thamboora Chaikoni which starts 3 counts on atheetha with lovely swaraprastharam. The highlight of the concert was a very remarkable RTP in Natakuranji…
“Madhavi Sodari Sundari Manini Mamava” in Trisra nadai Khanda triputa with ragamalika swaras in Varali n … The artist concluded the concert with a Meera bhajan in raga Deepali. Hariguna gaavatha nachungi. It did take audience to a dancing mood.
The rhythmic dexterity for which Sri Phalgun is well-known captivated the audience in the scintillating thani avarthanam presented by the duo following the Kriti Koluvamaregada in Adi talam and a crisp mohara-mukthaya after RTP in trisra nadai Khanda Triputa tala.
