With summer temperatures rising steadily in Bengaluru, doctors are observing an increase in dehydration-related health issues. While many people are aware that dehydration can cause weakness and fatigue, its impact on throat and voice health is often overlooked. ENT specialists are seeing more patients during summer with complaints of throat dryness, irritation, and voice changes—many of which are linked to inadequate hydration.
According to recent health trends in Bengaluru, hospitals witness a noticeable rise in dehydration cases during peak summer weeks. Additionally, outpatient visits for heat-related conditions such as headache, fatigue, fever, and dehydration rise by nearly 20% during extreme heat spells. These patterns highlight how dehydration has become a common concern among city residents.
“Hydration plays a crucial role in maintaining throat and voice health,” says Dr. Prerit Rao, Consultant ENT Surgeon at Medicover Hospital. “The vocal cords need adequate moisture to function smoothly. When the body is dehydrated, the throat becomes dry and the vocal cords lose lubrication, leading to hoarseness, frequent throat irritation, and voice fatigue. These symptoms are further worsened by acid reflux, smoking, pollution, etc.
Dehydration can cause symptoms such as persistent throat dryness, burning sensation, frequent throat clearing, and reduced voice strength. If not addressed, it may lead to inflammation of the vocal cords and temporary voice disorders. People who speak for long hours—such as teachers, singers, call-centre professionals, and public speakers—are particularly vulnerable. Children, elderly individuals, and those working outdoors in high temperatures are also at higher risk.
Spending long hours in air-conditioned environments can worsen the problem. Air conditioners reduce humidity in the air, causing the throat to dry out faster. Combined with insufficient water intake, this can lead to significant voice strain and discomfort.

Dr. Prerit Rao advises maintaining adequate hydration as the simplest preventive measure. Adults should drink at least 2.5 to 3 liters of water daily during summer. Those who sweat excessively should consider electrolyte-rich fluids such as coconut water and ORS. Limiting excessive caffeine and very cold beverages can also help prevent throat irritation. Eating water-rich fruits and giving adequate rest to the voice are equally important.
As Bengaluru continues to experience hotter summers and frequent heat waves, dehydration is emerging as a silent contributor to throat and voice problems. Ensuring proper hydration and taking simple preventive steps can go a long way in protecting vocal health during the summer season.
