Amruthavarshini Beiji is a brain child of Trivandrum Dr.Uma Ramakrishna, an eminent Carnatic vocalist, that imparts Indian classical music to students in Belgium and neighbouring European countries. Several students have been groomed into performing artists across the globe.
The institution teaches pure traditional form of the art in the Guru-Shishya Parampara, including Carnatic classical and devotional music, training students in Vocal, Veena, Violin, Flute, Konnakol, Mridangam The Institution has disciples in Begium, France, Germany, Netherlands. It has affiliation with The Tamil Nadu Dr.J. Jayalalitha Music and Fine arts University, Chennai. The school has also started bringing out a newsletter “Aurora”, which was officially launched in 2024. Several concerts have been organised all through the year.
On 31st May, a novel program Strings of Spring, was organisedby Amruthavarshiniat Nova Karklaan 19, Machelen, which was supported by the Indian Embassy at Brussels, Belgium. The concept of the event, to feature string instruments across genres of classical music that included Carnatic, Hindustani, Western on a single platform, was unique and hugely appreciated by the audience.
The show featured several reputed International artists performing on various string instuments and presenting various genres of music.
The presentations began with Vidwan Ganesh on Chitra Veena, who played a melodious and exquisite Carnatic classical composition in raga “Yedukulakamboji”, a most challenging Swarajathi of one of the revered trinities of Carnatic music, Sri Shyamashastri.
The Iguaran quartet Elizabeth Agudelo, (Columbia) Clara Larrauri, Paula Cirmi (Argentina), Ana Maria Velasco(Spain) presented some beautiful numbers on violin and cello.
Their immaculate presentation of Latin American, Columbian and Spanish Classics demonstrated their mastery over the instruments.
The Indian Saraswathi Veena and Mridangam duet was presented by Vid. Y.G.Srilatha Nikshith and Nikshith . A beautiful Krithi “Shiva Shiva Shiva yenarada” in raga Kamavardhini set to Adi tala, a composition of Saint Thyagaraja, another one of the trinities, was performed brilliantly, A lovely creative part, included a proficient alapana, tanam, intricately wovenswaraprastharm were captivating and received huge applause.
Still Denys on guitar, who rendered Bulgerian Classics and his own composition was mesmerising.
Vid. Dr.Jyotsna Srikanth, known for her command in both Carnatic and Western music and has several scores in film music as well, presented a lovely composition of Saint Thyagaraja, Brovabharama in raga Bahudari set to adi talam, with lilting swaras keeping the audience in awe. Further, she presented her own compositions on the six seasons along with the violin quartet. She chose two seasons, monsoon and winter.
The main presentation of the evening was by the team of Chitra veena – Vid.Ganesh, Saraswathi Veena -YG Srilatha Nikshith, Violin- Dr.Jyotsna Manjunath, Mridangam,-Nikshith T, Tabla- Heiko Dijker and Khanjira – Carlo Strazzante. The masterpiece, the core of any Carnatic music concert, Ragam -Tanam-Pallavi, set to Keeravani Ragam and Adi thalam, stole the show. It was composed by Vid.Ganesh. The Percussion ensemble on their solo presentation scored a standing ovation.
The entire concept was put together by Dr.Uma Ramakrishna, Director of Amruthavarshini whose efforts to bring together various genres of music on one platform is really commendable.
