Narayana Health City organised a press conference here, to highlight stories of hope and successful treatment of Ovarian Germ Cell Tumours (OGCTs) — a lesser-known but highly curable group of ovarian cancers that commonly affect teenage girls and young women.
Addressing the press, Dr Rohit Raghunath Ranade, Senior Consultant and Clinical Lead – Gynaecologic Oncology, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, threw light on the campaign titled ‘Hope & Healing: Understanding Germ Cell Tumours of the Ovary’ and shared success stories from across Kalaburagi, Bidar, Vijayapura (Bijapur), Bagalkot, Yadgir and Raichur districts.
These real patient journeys demonstrated how timely diagnosis, advanced surgical expertise and multidisciplinary cancer care helped young women overcome cancer while preserving fertility and quality of life.
“Awareness is the first step to save lives. Many young women do not realise that certain ovarian tumours are completely curable — and that fertility can be preserved — when treatment happens early under expert guidance of specialists. It is therefore important to consult a doctor as soon as possible,” Dr Rohit explained.
Ovarian Germ Cell Tumours account for only two-three per cent of ovarian cancers but are seen predominantly in younger age groups. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, swelling or a rapidly enlarging mass are often ignored, leading to delays in diagnosis.
At Narayana Health City, early detection combined with fertility-sparing surgery and modern chemotherapy has resulted in excellent outcomes for several patients from North Karnataka.
Real-Life Case Highlights Shared During the Meet
Dr Rohit Ranade shared a few case studies to show how the condition can be treated successfully, with early diagnosis and right treatment.
🔹 Case 1: A 21-year-old woman who went on to become a mother after cancer surgery
The newly married young woman was diagnosed with a large mixed germ cell tumour. She underwent successful fertility-sparing oncologic surgery at Narayana Health City, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. Her recovery was smooth, and she remained disease-free on follow-up. In a heartening development, she later conceived naturally and is now a mother — a rare and powerful example of how expert surgical planning can preserve both life and fertility in young women with ovarian cancer.
🔹 Case 2: Robotic precision saves a woman with a rare malignant transformation
The second case highlighted was about a 28-year-old patient diagnosed with an extremely rare condition — poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma arising within a dermoid cyst. She underwent robotic-assisted restaging surgery along with lymph node dissection and omentectomy, followed by chemotherapy. The minimally invasive approach ensured precise tumour removal, minimal blood loss and faster recovery. The patient is now disease-free and leading a healthy life.
“These cases reflect the strength of multidisciplinary care — combining precision surgery, advanced technology and a personalised approach,” Dr Rohit added.
Strengthening Cancer Care Access in North Karnataka
To expand specialised cancer care access, Dr Rohit Ranade and the Narayana Health team have already conducted outreach OPD services in the Kalaburagi and Raichur districts, ensuring timely evaluation, referral and follow-up for women presenting with ovarian masses or related symptoms.
