As part of Silver jubilee year celebrations of Sri M.A. Narasimhachar Foundation, Vid. V.V. Ravi gave a soulful violin concert at Sri Rama Lalitha kalamandira Accompanied by a very lively mridangam by Sri Puttur Nikshith and ghatam by the veteran Dr. Trichy K. Murali, known for his technical expertise, the concert was an epitome of true traditional style of yester years. and gave an enriching experience.
A highly accomplished violin maestro, Vadakkanchery Veeraraghava Bhagavathar Ravi, popularly known as V.V. Ravi, is the brother of veteran violinist V.V. Subramaniam and hails from a family of musicians. His first Guru is his father Vadakkanchery Veeraraghava Iyer. His grandfather was a court musician in the Swathi Thirunal Sangeetha Sabha, Kerala. Having further trained under eminent gurus like Sri Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Sri Shemmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Vid. V.V. Ravi has a very masterly and scholarly playing technique, melodious bowing, an amazing dexterity in fingering which give a blissful experience to the listener. He is a highly respected accompanist who has played with several distinguished musicians like BharatRatna Dr. M.S. Subbulakshmi, Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Vid. D.K. Pattammal, Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari, Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna.
Choice of compositions for the concert bore the stamp of classicism. Endowed with a rich repertoire, his presentation included a spectrum of composers and compositions. Navaragamalika varnam of Sri Patnam Subramanya Iyer, Pranamamyaham, by Mysore Vasudevacharya in Gowla, Sri Papanasam Sivan’s Paratpara parameswara in Vachaspathi, popular Purandaradasa devaranama in Atana, Sakalagrahabala neene, Balakrishnam in Gopika vasantham by Sri Muthuswamy Dikshithar, Mayatheetha Swarupini of Sri Ponniah Pillai in Mayamalava gowla, Vara Narada Narayana of Saint Thyagaraja in Vijayashree, Marivere of Sri Shyama Shastri in Anandabhairavi, Sendhil Andavan of Sri Papanasham Shivan in Kharaharapriya were beautifully presented, bringing out the full of essence of the ragas and lyrical beauty.
Ethavunnara of Saint Thyagaraja brought back to memory, the classic presentation by artists like Vid. Shemmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. Melodious alapana, swaraprastharam in Vachaspathi, Kharaharapriya, Kalyani ragas, pleasant nerval in Kalyani were testimony to a superior manodharma.
On the percussion, the artists accompanied with wonderful understanding and presented an excellent thaniavartanam in Adi talam.
For the concluding part the choice of Manavemantralaya by Sri Padmacharan, paying obeisance to Guru Raghavendra swamy, was very impressive with lovely music score, a ragamalika starting in Shuddhasarang, transcending into Bhageshree, Revathi. The recital concluded with maithreem bhajatha of Jagadguru Sri Chandra Shekarendra Saraswathi Swamy, a prayer for world peace set to ragamalika in yamunakalyani and kapi. The concert was well organised in a beautiful ambience.
