In a milestone for healthcare in Central Karnataka, the SS Narayana Superspeciality Centre here has successfully performed the region’s first-ever Modified Bentall Procedure, a highly complex open-heart surgery.
The life-saving operation was performed on a 43-year-old patient, who was admitted to the hospital with severe chest pain and a critically dilated aortic root that was at immediate risk of rupture.
The surgery, led by Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgeon Dr. Gautham A, involved replacement of the patient’s diseased aortic valve, aortic root and aneurysmal ascending aorta was excised and replaced with a synthetic graft.
According to Dr. Gautham, the aortic root and proximal ascending aorta were “hugely dilated”, which indicated a high risk of a fatal tear. The aneurysm was so large that it was actively compressing the patient’s Right Atrium (RA).
The team opted for the complex Modified Bentall Procedure, during which the coronary buttons were successfully re implanted into the synthetic graft to maintain blood flow to the heart muscle.
Despite the high-risk nature of this procedure, the patient’s post-operative recovery was uneventful. Follow-up imaging confirmed that the heart functioning was normal and the new valve was opening perfectly. The patient has since been discharged from the hospital in a stable condition, a few days ago.
The surgery is a landmark achievement for Central Karnataka. Previously, patients with such complex aortic conditions often had to endure long-distance travel to metropolitan centres-a journey that could be fatal in emergency cases of impending aortic rupture. While this surgery is performed in major cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad, the successful completion of a Bentall procedure in Davanagere marks a significant shift in medical accessibility for the residents of this entire region.
“This achievement reflects our commitment to bringing world-class cardiac care to the doorstep of Central Karnataka, ensuring that even the most complex heart conditions can be successfully treated locally,” said hospital facility Director Mr. Sunil Bhandarigal.
