Football legend Lionel Messi has once again scripted history on the World Cup stage. Defending champions Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Egypt in a knockout match.
Messi missed a penalty in the first half but made a strong comeback by scoring a crucial equaliser in the 83rd minute. Later, Enzo Fernández netted the winning goal during injury time, sealing a memorable victory for Argentina. Notably, the team staged a remarkable comeback after trailing 0-2 until the 79th minute.
With this goal, Messi became the first player in World Cup history to score in six consecutive knockout matches. He has also extended his streak of scoring in nine consecutive World Cup matches.

In the 2026 World Cup, Messi’s goal tally has risen to eight, taking his overall World Cup goals to 21. He has also equalled Argentine legend Guillermo Stábile’s record of scoring eight goals in a single World Cup edition.
Additionally, Messi became only the second Argentine player after Diego Maradona to score a goal, complete at least five dribbles, and create more than five chances in a single World Cup match.
However, Messi also registered an unwanted record by missing a penalty in the same match, becoming the first player to miss two penalties in a single World Cup edition. With this, he now has four missed penalties in his World Cup career.
