ಗುರುವೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ಗುರುವೇ ವಿಷ್ಣು ಮತ್ತು ಗುರುವೇ ಮಹೇಶ್ವರ. ಗುರುವೇ ನಿಜವಾದ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆಯನ್ನು ಸಾರುವ ಈ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಅರ್ಥದಂತೆ, ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಅತ್ಯುನ್ನತ ಸ್ಥಾನ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಂತಹ ಗುರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ಪವಿತ್ರ ದಿನವೇ ಗುರು ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮೆ.

ಹಿಂದೂ ಪಂಚಾಂಗದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಆಷಾಢ ಮಾಸದ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆಯಂದು ಗುರು ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಗುರು ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮೆ ಜುಲೈ 19ರಂದು ಬುಧವಾರ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಹಿಂದೂಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ ಬೌದ್ಧರು ಸಹ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಗೌರವದಿಂದ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಗುರು ಎಂಬ ಪದವು ‘ಗು’ ಮತ್ತು ‘ರು’ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳಿಂದ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಗು’ ಎಂದರೆ ಅಂಧಕಾರ ಅಥವಾ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ, ‘ರು’ ಎಂದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ದೂರ ಮಾಡುವವನು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಗುರು ಎಂದರೆ ಅಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ದೂರ ಮಾಡಿ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ನೀಡುವವನು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
