For 48-year-old Unnikrishnan, life for several years revolved around dialysis sessions, medications, and the hope of survival. In 2022, he was diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure. Though the diagnosis was devastating, he was initiated on regular dialysis and enrolled on the deceased donor kidney transplant waiting list, as no suitable donor was available within his family.
Despite facing significant health challenges including a long dialysis history of 36 months, poorly controlled hypertension, and a hypertensive stroke in 2024 Unnikrishnan remained disciplined and compliant with treatment. Through regular dialysis and strict medical follow-up, he managed to maintain his health while waiting for a transplant.
After nearly three years of waiting, a deceased donor kidney from an 18-year-old male, who lost his life in a road traffic accident, became available. The donor kidney had good functional parameters and was suitable for transplantation.
The kidney transplant was successfully performed under the leadership of Consultant Nephrologist Dr. Nishchay B and Transplant Surgeons Dr. Pramod S and Dr. Dileep M, along with their dedicated medical team. With expert care, close monitoring, and timely treatment, the transplanted kidney gradually recovered its function.
Today, Unnikrishnan has been freed from dialysis and is leading a normal life with good kidney function.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Nishchay B emphasized that dialysis should not be considered the final option for eligible patients.
“Dialysis is not the last option for patients who are eligible for kidney transplantation. After proper evaluation and investigations, such patients can continue dialysis while being enrolled on the deceased donor transplant waiting list. With discipline, regular follow-up, and timely treatment, successful kidney transplantation is completely possible,” he said.
Doctors added that many patients lose hope believing dialysis is lifelong, whereas deceased donor kidney transplantation continues to offer a new lease on life to thousands of patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease.
