Host nation India delivered a historic performance at the inaugural World Yogasana Championship held at the IKEA Arena in Ahmedabad, dominating the global stage with an exceptional medal haul.
The championship, which concluded on Monday, saw India secure a staggering 114 medals, including 102 golds, underlining its supremacy in the sport.

Japan finished second with three gold, three silver, and five bronze medals. Argentina claimed third place, powered by standout athlete Nabila Barraza, who won two gold and three silver medals.
Neighbouring Nepal secured fifth place with a total of 52 medals (1 gold, 36 silver, 15 bronze), while Uzbekistan finished with 25 medals, including one gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze.
A total of 522 athletes from 79 countries participated in the championship. Athletes from 31 countries won medals, while 10 nations managed to clinch at least one gold.
The event, hosted in Ahmedabad—set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games—is being seen as a landmark moment in transforming the ancient Indian practice of yogasana into a globally competitive sport, with aspirations of eventual inclusion in the Olympic Games.

The championship was supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of AYUSH, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Gujarat State Sports Authority, Gujarat Tourism, and Yogasana sports bodies.
India fielded a strong 122-member contingent, competing across six age categories: Sub-Junior (10–14 years), Junior (14–18), Senior (18–28), Senior A (28–35), Senior B (35–45), and Senior C (45–55).
In a video message, World Yogasana President Yogrishi Swami Ramdev Ji Maharaj said, “The World Yogasana Championship is not just a destination; it is the beginning of a global movement. Yoga is not merely a sport—it is a way of life that promotes health, harmony, peace, and human unity.”

India’s Ishika Guchait and Ishanvi won gold (90.89). Zambia’s Nia Vijayvargiya and Aarohi Lokhande took silver (82.38), while Japan’s Renka Aoki and Ichika Shimizu claimed bronze (60.34).

India’s Deepa Lodhi and Seema Neopane secured gold (90.42). Nepal’s Swikshya Thapa and Pragya Gautam won silver (56.39), and Zambia’s Tsila Blessings Phiri and Deborah took bronze (41.30).
India’s dominant showing has reinforced its leadership in yogasana and boosted efforts to establish the discipline as a recognized international competitive sport, potentially paving the way for its future inclusion in the Olympic Games.
