In a swift response to the incident, Energy Minister K.J. George has announced an immediate technical investigation into the Bidadi power generation unit, where hot ash was released due to waste.
After visiting the Bidadi waste-to-power plant on Tuesday, he informed the press that the issue is technical and a decision will be taken once the investigation is completed.
Reports indicate that the pipe carrying the ash was blocked, and workers opened it without taking necessary safety precautions, causing the sudden release of hot ash. The incident left five workers injured, with one succumbing to their injuries on Tuesday. The minister assured that compensation would be provided to both the deceased and the injured workers.
In response to a question, the minister clarified that the ISGEC company set up the plant, which has not yet been transferred to KPCL. The incident took place during the inspection phase. He further stated that the plant will be officially inaugurated once all issues are resolved, reaffirming his commitment to a safe and efficient plant.
The first waste-to-energy (BWTE) plant in Karnataka is being set up in Bidadi. This inclusive initiative is a collaboration between Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The Energy Minister said the plant is designed to generate 11.5 megawatts of electricity by processing 600 metric tons of dry waste daily.
The contract for the construction of this plant was awarded to M/s ISGEC Heavy Engineering Limited, Noida, with M/s Hitachi Zosen India as its collaboration partner. ISGEC is responsible for the construction, while Hitachi Zosen India provides technical expertise.
