The Shiva temples in the old Mysuru region are renowned for their vibrant Shivaratri celebrations. Devotees engage in various activities, from fire walking to folk art performances, to honor the festival. This year, however, a Shiva temple in Namma Mysuru will focus on the theme of lake conservation during the festivities.
The Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple, located in K Hemmanahalli and established by Hoysala King Veerabllala II in 1188 AD, is one of the region’s historical temples. Situated off Gaddige Road on the outskirts of the city, the temple underwent renovations in 1994.
Each year, the Mahashivaratri festival is marked by a car festival at this temple, featuring numerous pro-social activities, cultural, and religious events. This year, in addition to the traditional rituals and activities, the local community has chosen to utilize the festival as a platform to promote lake conservation awareness. The celebrations will include a lake festival at the nearby heritage site, Madagalli Lake, also referred to as Krishnaraja Lake, which aims to educate the public on the significance of preserving lakes.

This lake, with a history spanning over a century, was once a vital source of drinking water for Mysuru city. According to the temple trustees, the lake, constructed during the reign of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, covers 37 acres across the villages of Madagalli and Sahukarhundi within the Mysuru taluk. Originally constructed to supply drinking water to Mysuru, the lake will be open for devotees to walk around during the Shivaratri celebrations on Wednesday, February 26.
Devotees participating in the Kere Habba have the opportunity to walk around the lake alongside their families and friends, appreciating the tranquil beauty of the lake and its lush environment.
“Our goal is to spread the message of lake conservation to all,” state the temple trustees.
On the occasion of Sri Mahashivratri, devotees will have the opportunity to perform Abhishekam on the ancient Shivalinga located in the Ashokavan of the temple. Throughout the day, Rudrabhishekam, decorations, and Mass Feeding will take place as part of the festival. Additionally, a free health camp will be organized by expert Ayurvedic doctors under the auspices of Arogya Bharati and Seva Bharati, starting at 10 am.
