The Zojila Road Tunnel project, a strategic infrastructure initiative set to transform connectivity between Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, has reached its final stage. Marking a historic milestone in India’s infrastructure development, the project is poised to play a crucial role in strengthening national security.

Stretching 13.153 kilometers, the Zojila Tunnel is located at an altitude of approximately 11,578 feet above sea level. It is set to become the longest bi-directional single-tube road tunnel at such a high altitude in the world, a remarkable engineering achievement.

A New Era of Connectivity
The tunnel connects Baltal (near Sonamarg in Srinagar) with Minamarg in the Drass-Kargil region, offering a permanent solution to the long-standing issue of disrupted connectivity caused by heavy snowfall and avalanches. Currently, the Zojila Pass remains closed for several months each year due to extreme weather conditions.

Once completed, the tunnel will ensure all-weather, year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. This will significantly ease the movement of people and goods to strategically important regions such as Drass, Kargil, and Leh, boosting tourism, trade, and emergency services. Importantly, it will also enhance military logistics and preparedness along sensitive border areas.

Engineering Excellence and Technology
The project is being executed by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), with construction undertaken by Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL). The tunnel is being built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), a modern engineering technique suited to the complex geological conditions of the Himalayas.

Key Milestones

  • Project Start: October 1, 2020
  • Nilgrar Tunnels Breakthrough: Completed during 2021–22
  • Shaft-3 Breakthrough: November 15, 2023
  • Shaft-1 Breakthrough: July 28, 2025
  • Final Breakthrough of Zojila Main Tunnel: June 9, 2026
  • Overcoming Extreme Challenges

Construction of the Zojila Tunnel has taken place under some of the harshest conditions in the Western Himalayas. Workers have faced temperatures ranging from -20°C to -30°C, heavy snowfall, avalanche threats, and fragile rock formations.

Over the past five years, the project site has witnessed five major avalanche incidents. In January 2023, a massive avalanche trapped 172 workers, all of whom were successfully rescued by the Indian Army. Despite these challenges, the project team has demonstrated resilience and continued progress toward completion.

Project Highlights

  • Total Project Length: 30.894 km
  • Main Zojila Tunnel: 13.153 km
  • Nilgrar Twin Tunnels: 457 m & 1.95 km
  • Bridges: 3 (Total length: 460 m)
  • Vertical Shafts: 3 (for ventilation and emergency safety)
  • Longest Vertical Shaft in India: 474.30 m
  • Cut-and-Cover Structures: 2.35 km
  • Snow Protection Gallery: 450 m
  • Safety Achievement

The project has recorded over 10 million safe man-hours, reflecting a strong commitment to worker safety. More than 1,200 personnel are involved in the project, with nearly 80% being local residents, contributing to regional employment and development.

Conclusion
The final breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel marks a significant achievement in India’s tunneling and infrastructure sector. It brings the long-awaited dream of seamless, all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh closer to reality.

Beyond infrastructure, the Zojila Tunnel stands as a symbol of India’s engineering capability, resilience, and commitment to national security and regional development.
