One of the scientific themes was on Samata rachana-symmetry and patterns in Carnatic music, presented by Sri Harish Venkataram from U.S., who presented few compositions highlighting the symmetry and patterns beautifully.
Variety of symmetry and patterns are found in compositions in Carnatic music, in lyrics, with yathi, prasa, prasthara , alliterations, in flow of swara patterns in varnams, in rhythmic flow of the music. Examples like Sri.Shyamashastri’s swarajathiKamakshi {Bhairavi}, 7 charanas start with 7 notes S R G M P D N in ascending order, Gopuchha yati, in Sreevaralakshmi(Sri- Muthuswamy Dikshithar) in the line ” Sri sArasapade, rasapade..”, Swaraakshara in compositions like “PaDaSaroja”, (charanam, navaragamalika varnam) may be cited. In the evergreen Sri raga Varnam, ‘Sami ninne’ of Sri Karur Devudu Iyer {adi talam}, 4th ethugada swaram Npm rgrs Npm pnsr … ( kamakoti sundara nannelukora)has an interesting symmetry, where each phrase starts at Npm.
Thyagaraja’s famous Krithi ‘sarasa sama dhana bheda danda chathura’ in Kapi Narayani, has an interesting permutation of the lyrics, which represent the 4 techniques of approach, sama, dhana, bheda and danda showing a symmetry in negotiation. There is also a symmetry in the commencement of lyrics in pallavi, anu Pallavi, charanam, each starting after 6 aksharams.
“Bhavathi vishwathome”, (Sri Swathi Thirunal, in Mukhari, mishra chapu) shows symmetry in commencement of Pallavi, Anupallavi and Charanam, lyrics in each start after 3 aksharas from samam of tala.
Blessed with a lovely voice, the cross-culture artist gave a lively demonstration for an eager audience. He was ably accompanied by Nivik Bharadwaj on Violin and Krish Mohan on Mridangam.
