Mysuru Division of South Western Railway successfully conducted a full-scale Annual Disaster Management Mock Drill at Harihar Railway Station on Thursday, in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), District Administration, Fire & Emergency Services, Health Department, Police Department, and other State Government agencies.
The mock drill was organized as part of Indian Railways’ ongoing disaster preparedness initiatives to assess the effectiveness of emergency response mechanisms and inter-agency coordination in handling railway accident scenarios.
As per the simulated situation, Train No. 06285 Mysuru–Belagavi Summer Special Express was assumed to have derailed and capsized within the station limits. Upon receipt of the alert, railway officials and emergency response teams promptly rushed to the site and initiated rescue and relief operations in accordance with established disaster management protocols.
Rescue teams from NDRF, SDRF, and Fire & Emergency Services swiftly commenced operations using specialized equipment.
Medical teams comprising doctors, nursing staff, and paramedical personnel from Railway and State Government hospitals established emergency medical centres and provided immediate first aid and triage to the simulated injured passengers.
The scenario involved multiple affected coaches, including one AC 3-tier coach, one sleeper coach, and one general coach. During the exercise, approximately 10 passengers were categorized as having minor injuries, 10 as grievous injuries, and 5 as fatalities to simulate real-time emergency conditions. Evacuation procedures were carried out efficiently, and the injured were transported to hospitals through ambulances for further treatment.
Senior officers of South Western Railway closely monitored the entire operation. Shri Mudit Mittal, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru; Shri Ramkrishna, Principal Chief Safety Officer (PCSO), South Western Railway; and Shri Balasundar P, Chief Mechanical Engineer (D & DM), South Western Railway, along with other senior railway officials and representatives from civil administration, were present during the drill.

The rescue and relief operations continued for nearly 120 minutes, during which critical aspects such as communication systems, inter-agency coordination, evacuation efficiency, medical response, crowd management, and restoration preparedness were thoroughly evaluated.
At the conclusion of the exercise, a detailed debriefing session was conducted. The Disaster Management Committee, led by the PCSO and CME/D&DM, reviewed the performance of all participating agencies, highlighted strengths, and identified areas for further improvement to enhance response readiness.
Such mock drills are conducted regularly as per the directives of the Ministry of Railways to strengthen disaster preparedness and ensure a swift, coordinated, and effective response during real-life emergencies. These exercises play a crucial role in minimizing loss of life and property while enhancing the operational readiness of all stakeholders.
