Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) has achieved the final breakthrough of the 13.153-km Zojila Road Tunnel on 9th June 2026, marking a historic milestone with the completion of excavation for the world’s longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at the highest altitude.
The Zojila Tunnel project is being executed by MEIL for the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to establish all-weather connectivity across the strategic Himalayan corridor between Baltal and Meenamarg.

Located in the Zojila region between the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, the tunnel is being developed at an elevation of around 11,578 feet above sea level under extremely demanding geological and climatic conditions. Once operational, the project will provide year-round connectivity on the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh axis, a route that remains affected by prolonged winter closures due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risks.
The main tunnel extends from the West Portal at Baltal to the East Portal at Meenamarg, with excavation undertaken from both ends. The final breakthrough of the main tunnel represents the completion of the most critical excavation phase and reflects the successful execution of underground works in fragile Himalayan geology under highly adverse terrain and weather conditions.
MEIL is constructing the Zojila Tunnel using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), a flexible and closely monitored tunnelling approach suited to variable rock strata and geotechnical uncertainty. This methodology has enabled sequential excavation, immediate support measures, and continuous ground response assessment, helping maintain stability, safety, and steady progress through one of India’s most complex mountain tunnelling environments.
In addition to the main tunnel, the overall project includes approach roads, bridges, protective works, cut-and-cover sections, snow protection structures, and associated tunnel components that together form a comprehensive corridor development package. The project is of immense socio-economic and strategic importance, as it is expected to improve mobility, strengthen logistics reliability, support tourism and essential services, and enhance connectivity for border regions.

Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for RT & H said, “This is a historic day in India’s infrastructure story. The Zojila Tunnel is set to make a world record record once it is fully operational. It will be a lifeline for the people of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Braving temperatures as low as −4°C, our workers, engineers, and everyone involved in construction worked very hard and completed the breakthrough. For this project, 80% of the workforce are local residents.
It is a state‑of‑the‑art tunnel with world‑class safety standards, providing all‑weather connectivity for Ladakh and Kashmir, unlike the earlier six‑month shutdowns.
India’s Technical excellence and engineering capabilities have been demonstrated in this tunnel’s construction.
Mr. P.V. Krishna Reddy, MD of MEIL Group; Mr. Harpal Singh, the project manager; and the workers and engineers worked round the clock to make this possible. The people of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir will soon enjoy its benefits.”

Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir said, “The long-awaited dream of the people of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir has finally come true. The joy on people’s faces shows how positively the tunnel’s completion will affect their lives. Improved transport, new opportunities, and tourism will bring real change to the region. Now that the breakthrough is complete, I hope the remaining work is finished quickly.”
Lt Governor of J&k Manoj Sinha
“The dream of all‑weather connectivity for Ladakh is coming true with the final breakthrough of the Zojila Tunnel. The engineers involved in the project have worked very hard under challenging conditions. Connectivity plays a key role in the development of any region, and the zojila tunnel will represent that.”
The project has registered a major safety milestone of 10 million safe man-hours, underscoring MEIL’s continued commitment to safe, disciplined, and quality-led execution. With the excavation phase of the main tunnel now completed, the project will progress to the next stages of lining, finishing systems, electro-mechanical installations, and associated corridor works required for operational readiness.
The Zojila Tunnel stands as a transformational intervention in Himalayan transport infrastructure and a strong symbol of India’s growing capability in executing complex, high-altitude tunnelling works. The successful breakthrough of the main tunnel brings the project significantly closer to its long-envisioned goal of seamless all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.
