In a major step to enhance rail capacity and operational efficiency, Indian Railways has approved the upgradation of the electric traction system on the Bengaluru–Tumkur section under South Western Railway.
Project Details:
The project involves converting the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a more advanced 2×25 kV system over a stretch of 120 track kilometres (TKM). The total sanctioned cost for the project is ₹162.57 crore.
Strategic Importance:
The Bengaluru–Tumkur section is part of the Highly Utilized Network (HUN) Route-10, a key corridor connecting major economic and industrial hubs along the Pune–Hubballi–Chikjajur–Birur–Tumkur–Bengaluru–Salem–Kanniyakumari route.

Expected Benefits:
The upgraded 2×25 kV traction system will significantly strengthen the power supply for train operations, enabling the section to handle higher traffic volumes efficiently. It will also support the movement of heavier freight trains and longer passenger services while improving the overall reliability of the electric traction infrastructure.
Impact on Rail Operations:
The project is expected to ease congestion on this critical route serving the Bengaluru metropolitan region and nearby districts. It will facilitate smoother and faster movement of both passenger and freight trains across Karnataka and southern India.
Modernisation Push:
This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise its electrical infrastructure, enhance network capacity, and improve operational performance on high-density corridors.
