Sampattu, a non-profit organisation run by an NGO, is a service oriented orphanage that promotes art and culture (Carnatic Music) in view of providing a milieu for integral development of the students of the centre. As a part of Cultural events, Carnatic Music and dance programs are arranged on the first Sunday of every month.
In the monthly concert series, for the month of August Sampattu organised a vocal concert by young promising talent, Kum. Hamsini Joisa from U.S.A.
Kum. Hamsini is being trained under Vid. Lavanya Kodandaraman, a disciple of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. Sriram kumar. The young artist has developed a distinct classical style with depth and has a remarkable control in presenting challenging ragas and compositions at ease. Endowed with a mellifluous voice, she took the audience to a rapturous attention during her concert at Sampattu on August 2nd for a full house.
Carnatic Music : Rising Star Hamsini Dazzles at Sampattu
Kum Hamsini gave a vibrant start to her concert with the famous varnam in raga saranga, intamodi seya by Thiruvottiyur Thyagayya, set to Adi tala. After a nice rendering of raga Mayamalavagowla, she went on to present the popular krithi of Sri Swathi Thirunal Maharaja, Deva deva kalayami followed by brisk swaras. A mature presentation of raga and Shyamashastri’s hard core krithi O Jagadamba in Anandabhairavi was a proof of her prowess.
Next was an impressive delineation of a rare raga Davalangi and set to khanda eka tala, acomposition on Mahalinga or Davalanga Shiva and his consort Brihadamba of Tanjavuru, Sringaradi Navarasangi, depicting Lord Shiva, as the embodiment of Navarasas.
Main composition for the evening was the well-known piece of Saint Thyagaraja in raga Dheera Shankarabharanam and set to mishra chapu tala, Manasu swadhina maina, which describes that mind control and true wisdom transcends all rituals and practices. The raga presentation was immaculate with rich bhava, depth and grandeur as it demands. Nerval and Swara kalpana in a tala like Mishra chapu was truly commendable for her age.

She sang melodious numbers, devaranama Hari chittasatya, of Saint Purandaradasa in raga jhonpuri, Sri Sharada bhujanga stotra, Suvakshoja kumbha, composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. Hamsini concluded her concert with a rare thillana of Sri Puchi Srinivasa Iyengar in raga Purnachandrika set toaditalam.
The accompanying artists, Ananya Rao on violin and Pavan Ekkadaka on Mridangam provided valuable support.
Hamsini is a young talented starin the making, who has already performed concerts at several venues in U.S and India! Kudos to her parents, Srida and Sucheta Joisa for inculcating the passion for the art form in her and their dedicated efforts in nurturing her talent. Wishing her a glorious musical career!
