The 150 years of National Song “Vande Mataram” was commemorated with great enthusiasm at Rail Soudha, South Western Railway Headquarters, Hubballi, on Friday.
General Manager Mukul Saran Mathur, along with Principal Heads of Departments, officers and staff, participated in the mass singing of Vande Mataram, marking the beginning of a historic year of celebrations.
The occasion was also commemorated across all divisions and offices of South Western Railway, where officers and staff joined in the mass singing with patriotic fervor.
As part of the commemoration, Vande Mataram was also played at railway stations across the South Western Railway zone, inspiring a spirit of patriotism and unity among passengers and staff alike. The event echoed the nationwide observance announced by the Government of India to celebrate 150 years of the national song – a timeless composition that has long been a symbol of India’s freedom and cultural pride.
Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875, Vande Mataram was later included in his novel Anandamath (1882). The song, which personifies India as the divine Mother, captured the essence of the national awakening during the freedom movement and became a unifying call for independence. It was first sung publicly at the Indian National Congress session in 1896, and on 24th January 1950, the Constituent Assembly accorded national status to its first two stanzas, adopting it as the National Song of India, complementing Jana Gana Mana, the National Anthem.
The commemoration also marked the start of a year-long celebration from 7th November 2025 to 14th November 2026, in line with the national observance. During this period, South Western Railway will organise a series of cultural programmes, exhibitions, awareness campaigns, and public singing events to pay tribute to this enduring symbol of national pride.
The event stood as a tribute to the enduring spirit of Vande Mataram, as a timeless symbol of India’s unity, identity, and devotion to the motherland, while the active participation of officers and staff demonstrated their patriotic fervour and solidarity.
