In a significant move to enhance rail capacity and operational efficiency on one of Karnataka’s busiest corridors, Indian Railways has sanctioned the upgradation of the electric traction system on the Bengaluru–Tumakuru section under South Western Railway.
The project involves converting the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a more advanced 2×25 kV system over a stretch of 120 Track Kilometres (TKM). The total sanctioned cost of the project is ₹162.57 crore.

The Bengaluru–Tumakuru section is part of the strategically important Highly Utilized Network (HUN) Route-10, which connects major economic and industrial hubs along the Pune–Hubballi–Chikjajur–Birur–Tumakuru–Bengaluru–Salem–Kanniyakumari corridor.
Officials stated that the adoption of the 2×25 kV traction system will significantly strengthen power supply arrangements for train operations, enabling the route to handle higher traffic volumes more efficiently. The upgraded system is also expected to support the operation of heavier freight trains and longer passenger services, while improving the overall reliability of the electric traction infrastructure.
The project is anticipated to help decongest a key rail route serving the Bengaluru metropolitan region and adjoining districts. It will also facilitate smoother movement of both passenger and freight traffic across Karnataka and southern India.

The upgrade aligns with Indian Railways’ broader efforts to modernise its electrical infrastructure, enhance network capacity, and improve operational performance on high-density corridors.
