A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern #Philippines on Monday, causing widespread destruction and killing at least 12 people, with several others injured, officials said.
The quake led to the collapse of multiple buildings, triggering panic across affected regions. Tsunami warnings were issued not only for the Philippines but also for neighboring countries including Indonesia, Taiwan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Japan.

Epicentre and Impact
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred in the sea about 24 kilometers west of Sarangani province on Mindanao island. Strong tremors were felt across several regions due to the high intensity of the quake.
Police officials in General Santos confirmed that at least 12 people have died and four others have been injured so far. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
Several buildings were severely damaged, with some completely collapsing.
Scenes of Destruction
Videos circulating on social media show a commercial complex in General Santos City flattened to the ground. A building housing a Jollibee fast-food outlet collapsed, while an abandoned school building in another area was also reduced to rubble.

Eyewitnesses expressed shock and fear, with one person heard saying, “Oh God, the building has completely collapsed.”
Aftershocks and Safety Warnings
Approximately two hours after the main quake, a strong aftershock measuring 6.1 magnitude struck the region, increasing panic among residents.
Authorities have urged the public to stay away from damaged buildings due to the risk of further collapses.
Cause of the Earthquake
Geologists say the earthquake occurred in one of the most seismically active regions of the country.
The affected areas lie near the Cotabato Trench, a major geological structure known for generating earthquakes, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Experts explained that the quake was caused by a subduction process, where one tectonic plate moves beneath another — a phenomenon capable of producing powerful earthquakes.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as aftershocks remain a concern. The incident highlights the Philippines’ vulnerability to earthquakes due to its location along a highly active seismic zone.
