ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದ ಹಿರಿಯ ನಟಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಅನುಭವಿ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿ ಉಮಾಶ್ರೀ (Umashree) ಅವರು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಿಧಾನಪರಿಷತ್ ಉಪಸಭಾಪತಿಯಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾಗುವ ಮೂಲಕ ತಮ್ಮ ಮೂರು ದಶಕಗಳ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಮಹತ್ವದ ಮೈಲಿಗಲ್ಲು ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಸಿನಿಮಾ, ರಂಗಭೂಮಿ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಛಾಪು ಮೂಡಿಸಿರುವ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಈ ಹೊಸ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ಲಭಿಸಿರುವುದು ವ್ಯಾಪಕ ಪ್ರಶಂಸೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಬಡತನದಿಂದ ಶಿಖರದವರೆಗೆ ಪಯಣ
1957ರ ಮೇ 10ರಂದು ತುಮಕೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ನೊಣವಿನಕೆರೆ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಉಮಾಶ್ರೀ ಅವರು ಬಡತನದ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ತಮ್ಮ ಬದುಕಿನ ಪಯಣ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲೇ ರಂಗಭೂಮಿಯತ್ತ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಅವರು ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ, ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ನಾಟಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭಿನಯಿಸಿ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯತೆ ಗಳಿಸಿದರು.
ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಸಾಧನೆ
1984ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಕಾಶೀನಾಥ್ ಅವರ ‘ಅನುಭವ’ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕ ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದ ಉಮಾಶ್ರೀ, ಹಾಸ್ಯ, ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಂಭೀರ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಅಭಿನಯದಿಂದ ಅಪಾರ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿದರು. ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ನಟಿಯಾಗಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಅನೇಕ ಗೌರವಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮದಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮತ್ತು ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಹಂತ
ಉಮಾಶ್ರೀ ಅವರು 1994ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಜಿ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಎಸ್. ಬಂಗಾರಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಪಕ್ಷ (ಕೆಸಿಪಿ) ಮೂಲಕ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಿಂದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಸಿದ ಮೊದಲ ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋಲು ಕಂಡರೂ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿದರು.
ವಿಧಾನಪರಿಷತ್ ಸದಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ
2001ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ವಿಧಾನಪರಿಷತ್ ಸದಸ್ಯೆಯಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾದ ಅವರು 2008ರವರೆಗೆ ಈ ಹುದ್ದೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಪರ ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದರು.
ವಿಧಾನಸಭೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮತ್ತು ಸಚಿವ ಸ್ಥಾನ
2008ರಲ್ಲಿ ತೇರದಾಳ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಿಂದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಸಿ ಸೋಲು ಕಂಡ ಉಮಾಶ್ರೀ, 2013ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅದೇ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಿಂದ ಗೆದ್ದು ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಶಾಸಕರಾದರು. ಬಳಿಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸಚಿವೆಯಾಗಿಯೂ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಮತ್ತು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಹಲವು ಇಲಾಖೆಗಳ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿದರು.

Bengaluru: Senior Kannada actress and seasoned politician Umashree has been elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the Karnataka Legislative Council, marking a significant milestone in her over three-decade-long political career. Known for her remarkable contributions to cinema, theatre, and public service, her elevation to this post has drawn widespread appreciation.
From humble beginnings to success
Born on May 10, 1957, in Nonavinakere village of Tumakuru district, Umashree rose from a modest background. She developed an early interest in theatre and gained popularity through performances in mythological, historical, and social plays.
A distinguished film career
Umashree entered the Kannada film industry in 1984 with director Kashinath’s film Anubhava. Over the years, she earned immense popularity for her versatile performances in comic, emotional, and serious roles. She is a recipient of the National Film Award for Best Actress, among several other honors.
Entry into politics
She began her political career in 1994 through former Chief Minister S. Bangarappa’s Karnataka Congress Party (KCP). Although she lost her first election from Hubballi, she remained committed to public service.
Legislative Council and Assembly journey
Umashree was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Council in 2001 and served until 2008.
In the 2008 Assembly elections, she contested from Teradal constituency but faced defeat. However, in 2013, she won from the same constituency, defeating BJP candidate Siddu Savadi, and entered the Legislative Assembly.
Ministerial role
Following her electoral success, she served as a Cabinet Minister in the Karnataka government, handling portfolios including Women and Child Development, where she played a key role in implementing welfare initiatives.
